What Is a Lot in Forex?

A lot is a standardized unit of measurement in forex trading. It represents the size of your trade. There are four main lot sizes:

  • Standard lot = 100,000 units ($10 per pip for EUR/USD)
  • Mini lot = 10,000 units ($1 per pip)
  • Micro lot = 1,000 units ($0.10 per pip)
  • Nano lot = 100 units ($0.01 per pip)

Why Lot Size Matters

Choosing the right lot size is the most important risk management decision you make as a forex trader. A position that's too large can wipe out your account on a single bad trade. A position that's too small won't generate meaningful returns.

Lot Size Formula

The formula to calculate lot size is:

Lot Size = (Account Balance ร— Risk %) รท (Stop Loss in Pips ร— Pip Value)

Then convert the result to lots: divide by 100,000 for standard lots, 10,000 for mini lots, or 1,000 for micro lots.

Step-by-Step Example

Scenario: $3,000 account, 1.5% risk, 25-pip stop loss on EUR/USD (pip value = $10 per standard lot).

  1. Risk amount = $3,000 ร— 1.5% = $45
  2. Position size = $45 รท (25 ร— $10) = 0.18 standard lots
  3. Lot conversion: 0.18 standard lots = 1.8 mini lots = 18 micro lots

You should trade 0.18 lots (or 1.8 mini lots). If stopped out, you lose exactly $45 โ€” 1.5% of your account.
