How It Works
A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest price movement in forex trading. For most major pairs, one pip is 0.0001, while for JPY pairs one pip is 0.01.
Knowing the pip value of your trade is essential for calculating position size and setting stop losses. Pip value changes based on the lot size, currency pair, and exchange rate.
This calculator shows you the pip value in both USD and the base currency for any lot size, pip decimal, and pair rate.
The Formula
Pip Value (USD) = (Pip Decimal × Lot Size × Contract Size) / Pair Rate (if USD is quote currency). Pip Value (Base) = (Pip Decimal × Lot Size × Contract Size) / Pair RateLot Size = Number of lots (1.0 = standard lot), Pip Decimal = 0.0001 for most pairs or 0.01 for JPY pairs, Contract Size = 100,000 units per standard lot, Pair Rate = Current exchange rate of the pair
Example
Scenario: You trade 1 standard lot of EUR/USD at 1.1000. The pip decimal is 0.0001.
Calculation: Pip Value (USD) = (0.0001 × 1 × 100,000) / 1.1000 = $9.09 per pip.
Result: Each pip movement is worth $9.09. A 20-pip move equals $181.80 profit or loss.
